Studio Photography (People)

The most popular reason for acquiring studio equipment is to photograph people. There are many approaches to lighting a portrait or people-based photoraphy depending on the context, for example, a fashion or beauty shot typically is approached differently from that of a character study or the portrait of a child.  This course is designed to teach the student how to effectively light portraiture both indoors and outdoors using studio lighting, as well as understanding the contexts of portrait types and how lighting and styling is approached.

Who should attend?

This is an advanced lighting course and students should be familiar with the technical aspects of either film or digital SLR cameras. If not, we strongly advise that students first complete the Camera Foundation course. Creative Lighting

There is a common misconception that expensive lighting equipment must be used to create dramatically lit photographs. However, understanding the basic principles of light as well as developing an awareness of lighting, enables the photographer to render the most challenging lighting situations into logical and easy-to-execute lighting set-ups.

This course introduces the student to the effective use of any available light source, such as daylight, tungsten- or torch light, in order to create interesting photographic images. This course purposefully limits the student’s use of photographic lighting equipment, and it allows for more imaginative lighting solutions and an adequate understanding of the principles of light.  All light sources and materials used for this course are found in and around the house.

Who should attend?

People from ages 14 and older can benefit from this course – provided that the student is already familiar with the technical aspects of either a film or digital single-lens reflex camera  We recommend that the student completes the camera foundation course in  order to furnish the student with such technical aspects prior to attending the creative lighting course.

This course was developed to allow the student to understand the different flash equipment available on the market and how to use it optimally.

FILM EDITING SOFTWARE (BASIC)

Editing is what makes film making the art form that it is. Yet for many would-be editors the apparent complexities of editing systems and theories make this a daunting prospect.
This short introductory course teaches learners how to use Final Cut Pro effectively and also gives an introduction to editing theory. This allows learners to approach the post-production of a film with the necessary skills and knowledge to be an effective and creative editor. Students will be introduced to key skills, such as importing and cutting footage. They will also be shown how to manipulate and edit sounds in Final Cut Pro. After completing of the course, students will know how to use of the various sound and visual effects that Final Cut Pro offers and will be ready to export their work to a DVD.

This short course introduces students to the more advanced aspects of Final Cut Studio, whether the student is building on previous Editing On Final Cut Pro course, or already has some experience in using Final Cut Pro. Students will gain an advanced knowledge of the Final Cut Pro workflow. Their sound editing skills will be advanced through an introduction to the use of Soundtrack Pro. Using the Colour programme will improve the students’ understanding and use of colour grading. Finally, students will be shown how to create and master a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. After completing the course, students will be able to edit and present their audio-visual work at a professional level.

This course builds on the Film Production Skills (Introduction) Course, but can be taken by students who want to improve their writing, directing, producing and sound recording skills. Students will be guided through techniques to improve their writing on both an aesthetic and practical level. They will be instructed on techniques that are vital to being a creative producer. Afterwards, they will workshop with actors to improve their directing directors. Finally, they will be taught how to ensure effective on-set sound recording.

Learners who:
know the basics of film making and who wish to improve their skills as writers or producers; and want to learn how to work with actors or record sound on set.

This course builds on what was learned in the Intermediate Film Production Skills Course, but can be taken by students who want to improve their directing, producing and lighting skills. The course starts off by demonstrating the finer points of producing a film. This includes the contracts and releases required for actors and locations, as well as tips and tricks for smart fundraising. To improve students’ skills as directors, there will be a workshop to advance their skills with regard to working with actors. This will be complemented by a workshop on improving their efficiency on a set management level. To round off the course, there will be a workshop on lighting skills and techniques.

Who should attend?

Learners who already have a sound film making knowledge and who wish to improve their organisational skills as producers; the manner in which they work with actors and crew members; or skillful lighting to add even more value to their work.

This course offers a thorough foundation for learners who have not had any, or limited formal training in painting. Through individual tuition, the learner will discover a personal vocabulary that is based on formal principles. This will develop into visual problem solving through the process of clear conceptual thought. Learners will also be assisted to expand their ability to experience and to convey their world in visual terms.

Who should attend?

Learners who are interested in acquiring general painting knowledge. This course will expose learners to various painting styles, painting techniques and genres.
An advanced painting course will be presented for students with previous experience in painting. Prospective students will be guided as to whether they should enroll for the advanced course. This course will focus on more advanced painting techniques, developing personal style and developing conceptual ideas and media exploration.

Figure drawing

The purpose of this course is to help students obtain the basic skill of drawing the human figure from observation of a live model. The degree of representation will vary from correct renderings of the figure to loose and expressive sketches. Focus will be on the development of observational skills, measuring techniques, the understanding of human proportions and the development of general drawing technique with the emphasis on line quality, gesture, contour, and tonal modeling.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for interested amateurs, art students, art teachers and the practicing artists who want to broaden their understanding of the processes and potentialities of drawing. Being able to draw the human body from life requires strong observational and perceptual ability. Therefore, it is recommended that the learner should be familiar with basic drawing techniques.

This course offers a thorough foundation to learners who have limited or no formal training in drawing. This course is an extension of the Observational Basic course.

Gouache, ink and other traditional drawing mediums will be used to experiment with in an illustrative manner. This introduction to printmaking course will cover a few basic printing techniques for beginners. The formal principles and techniques of monotype, drypoint etching and marley tile/lino printing will be explored. Students will experiment with mediums and techniques in order to produce their own prints under the themes provided.
