Moving space: C&CI 2010 short film competition

Loraine Beaton is one of 4 finalists in the Cement and Concrete Institute’s (C&CI) 2010 short film competition who will receive R25 000 to produce her film. Students were invited to focus a critical gaze on the built environment, in particular the urban environment, and the role of concrete in it.

The completed films will be shown at the Architect Africa Film Festival 2010, subject to selection for screening by the festival’s viewing committee. The Architect Africa Film Festival will form part of AZA 2010 and will visit all major centres in SA. Films will be made available and marketed to international architecture film festivals through the Architect Africa Film Festival (subject to all applicable protocols) and will be offered for broadcast to a local television channel.

Flags Galore

Miranda Rautenbach, Phillip Kraft, PJ Kotze, Cené van der Merwe and Ignatius Meyer entered an international exhibition that was open to artists and students. All our students were accepted into the exhibition. Cené even received a special mention in the German press. Their task was to select two flags of any country and to explore the relationship between them in a flash animation. (Visit: http://www.flag-metamorphoses.net/flag-animation.html).

The exhibition was held in Cologne on 16 April, will be going to Berlin soon and has just been invited to Singapore. Our students are credited as well as The Open Window.

Stamps

The Philatelic Department of the South African Post Office once again commissioned our Illustration students to create designs for stamps. Themes varied from “The year of Bio-diversity” to “Bridging the Digital Divide”. Students who came up with the winning designs were: Tyrone Patrick, Jacoline Naudé and Roxanne Thomas.
