DEPARTMENT: Creative Technologies

Open Window (OW) is an accredited private education institution recognised for setting innovative standards in the visual arts and digital sciences. Founded in 1994 with a focus on providing a unique tertiary platform where practice-led tuition links traditional fine art practice with the applied arts, we place emphasis in ongoing innovation to curricula in consideration of the rapidly evolving creative arts industries.

In addition to their academic roles, many Open Window lecturers are actively engaged in creative practice. Our investment in highly qualified and industry relevant staff is deemed critical in directing our students in work-integrated learning projects of value. 

The School of Creative Technologies seeks to appoint a lecturer for the Industrial Design subject in a permanent post. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic group of academics and professionals in Open Window’s School of Creative Technologies – an interdisciplinary school that blends creativity and technicality. Lecturers at The Open Window are employed to undertake facilitation (teaching), assessment, research and administrative duties within a specialist subject area.

What is Industrial Design at Open Window?

Industrial Design teaches students how to design user-centred physical products. The physical objects that surround us directly influence how we navigate and perceive the world. This specialisation guides students through the process of researching, imagining, modelling and creating the physical objects that people truly love. Students are given hands-on experience in using different materials and manufacturing methods to create a broad range of products from once-off items to mass-produced goods. Ultimately, the main focus is understanding how people use products and how to give them the best possible experience.


The role requires the following educational achievements:

  • A relevant Honours Degree (or NQF  8 equivalent). 
  • An up-to-date portfolio showing relevant practical work (within the Industrial Design field). 


The role requires technical competency in the following areas:

  • A technical, creative and inquisitive mindset.
  • Enthusiastic about the field of Industrial Design and a good grasp of the industry.
  • A willingness to research new materials, manufacturing and theories.
  • Learn new skills.
  • Exposure to user-centred design and practices.
  • Confident in one’s own drawing ability.
  • Practical (Hands-on approach).


The role requires competency in the following software:

  • (CAD Software) SolidWorks
  • (Rendering Software) Keyshot competency would be beneficial
  • Adobe Suite (Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Google Suite (Slides, Docs, Sheets)
  • Office Suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Word)
  • Miro
  • Slack


  • Facilitation of learning: Teach at an undergraduate level in the subject(s)
  • Curriculum development: Maintain and develop existing course content.
  • Course content and documentation: Create and provide course-related notes, briefs and other documents.
  • Student support: Mentor students and provide ongoing support.
  • Assessment: Conduct formative and summative assessments and record and finalise student achievements within the subject.
  • Event participation: Attend and participate in Open Window-related events and initiatives such as Open Days, departmental events.
  • Ideation and discussion: Participation in strategic initiatives related to teaching, creative production, research and social engagement.
  • Workflow and Process: General proficiency in digital office tools and other tools (Google Suite).

  • Strong visual intelligence and aesthetic sensibility
  • Enthusiasm towards the subject(s) and field(s)
  • Display a good grasp of the industry (locally and internationally) as well as the discourse related to the field

  • Capable of working in a team (very important)
  • Be able to cope under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Be dynamic, adaptable, and a creative thinker with administrative skills

Added advantages for this position:

  • A relevant Masters degree is an added advantage, as well as a teaching qualification.
  • Skills and experience in any other discipline relating to Creative Technologies (creative computing, UX, Development, etc.)
  • Experience with fabrication technologies such as 3D printing and Laser Cutting


R320 000 – R380 000 (dependent on experience and educational level)

A relevant contract will be negotiated in line with our remuneration scales, dependent on experience and educational level. No additional benefits are on offer, other than a Retirement Annuity which Open Window contributes towards. The annual remuneration package is negotiable and will be commensurate with the incumbent’s overall experience and qualification level, as communicated through the application in relation to Open Window’s policies and procedures.
