Open Window (OW) is an accredited private education institution recognised for setting innovative standards in the visual arts and digital sciences. The School of Creative Technologies seeks to appoint a lecturer for the User Experience Design subject in a permanent post primarily focused on first year level. We are interested in a candidate that seeks meaningful connection through the facilitation of learning and mentorship.  The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic group of academics and professionals in Open Window’s School of Creative Technologies – an interdisciplinary school that blends creativity and technicality. In addition to the above mentioned subject, the faculty also includes Interactive Development and Product Design. 

What is User Experience Design (UI / UX)?

User Experience Design (UI /UX) is a specialisation focused on the conceptualisation and design of interactive products, systems and services unique to the digital age. The course focuses on teaching students to craft beautiful and intuitive user interfaces, develop optimal user experiences through research and testing, and ultimately bring their creations to life through pleasurable and effective digital prototypes and implementations. This course combines creative visual thinking with complex problem solving to produce digital products such as mobile applications, websites and interactive displays. The course at Open Window is characterised by a strong user-centred design philosophy and digital workflow focus.

Main Responsibilities & Duties:
On a broad level the candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Facilitation of learning: Teach at an undergraduate level in the subject Interaction Design
  • Curriculum development: Maintain and develop existing course content
  • Course content and documentation: Create and provide course related notes, briefs and other documents
  • Student support: Mentor students and provide ongoing support
  • Assessment: Conduct formative and summative assessments and record and finalise student achievements within the subject.
  • Event participation: Attend and participate in Open Window related events and initiatives such as Open Days
  • Ideation and discussion: Participation in strategic initiatives related to teaching, creative production, research and social engagement
  • Workflow and Process: General proficiency in digital office tools and other tools (Google Suite)

Educational Requirements:

  • High school certificate
  • Minimum qualification: NQF Level 8 (honours degree or equivalent) or higher – in the field of design, ux design, multimedia or related fields
  • Masters degree would be highly beneficial

Soft Skill Requirements:

  • Emotional maturity and soft skills for interpersonal development of both colleagues and students
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Industry and Design Knowledge Requirements:

  • Practical experience in interaction design and related disciplines
  • In-depth knowledge of current trends in industry
  • A progressive attitude in the field of Interactive Design and a willingness to see the field develop from an education perspective
  • Knowledge of design principles and elements
  • Colour Theory
  • Problem solving and problem framing skills
  • Ideation and conceptual abilities
  • Sketching and drawing
  • Knowledge of digital workflow and processes
  • Knowledge in the field of Human computer interaction
  • Information architecture
  • Wireframing
  • UX research methods and techniques
  • UX processes and documentation types
  • Design systems

Software Requirements:

The role requires competency in the following software:

  • Figma and Figjam
  • Adobe Suite (Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Google Suite (Slides, Docs, Sheets)
  • Office Suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Word)
  • Miro
  • Mac OS competency
  • Slack

Technical Requirements:

  • Strong internet connection
  • Webcam access

Added Advantages:

  • Portfolio of Interaction Design, User Experience or User Interface Design work
  • Practical work experience in Interaction Design, Interface Design or User Experience fields
  • Teaching qualification
  • Experience in facilitation of learning at tertiary level 
  • Experience in developing curriculum
  • Loadshedding mitigation ability
  • HTML and CSS

Remuneration:

R320 000 – R400 000 (negotiable, dependent on experience and educational level)

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s overall experience as communicated through the application in relation to The Open Window’s policies and procedures.
No additional benefits are on offer other than a Retirement Annuity which The Open Window pays for outside of your remuneration package.
