Documentaries are defined by their inherent claim to be telling the truth about the world. No matter how “unmediated” the eventual footage projected on a screen may eventually be, there is always the discernible mark of a filmmaker in every documentary: a lens aiming at “the truth”. Some documentaries tell stories, some investigate a certain category of things that may or may not exist, some make persuasive rhetorical arguments, some do all of the above.

South Africa is an incredibly wealthy place to live in if gripping storytelling, skillful investigation or framing arguments is part of your creative process. We are confident that the selection of short documentaries made by South African students presented here in the first annual Lens Flare Film Festival will be a showcase of young creative minds engaging critically, sensitively and poetically with their surroundings, presenting their unique worlds to us through carefully aimed lenses.
