SUMMARY:Matter - Staff Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC EVENT OPENING (SUBMISSIONS OPEN TO STAFF ONLY) \nThis year’s staff exhibition is centred on the theme “Matter” — a prompt to reflect on material\, substance\, and the significance of the tangible in a world increasingly shaped by the digital and the conceptual. \n“Matter” invites participants to engage with the physicality of making: texture\, weight\, surface\, decay\, transformation. \nWhether through the reuse of found materials\, the exploration of digital materiality\, the use of unconventional tools\, or the layering of process onto substance\, this theme asks you to investigate how matter holds memory\, resistance\, agency — and how materials carry narratives of culture\, industry\, the environment\, or the self. Staff are invited to either respond literally through sculpture\, texture\, or craft or conceptually — considering invisible materials\, the dematerialisation of digital work\, or the politics of sourcing. In all cases\, “Matter” is a call to reconnect with the stuff of things. \nAll creative mediums are welcome: visual art\, design\, moving image\, photography\, sculpture\, installation\, performance documentation\, sound\, interactive media\, etc. \nOW Staff members: SUBMIT YOUR WORKS HERE

SUMMARY:Lo-Fi Street Cred - Artist's Zines and Alternative Publications Exhibition and Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”694956″]- OPEN TO ALL – \nWe invite you to join us for the exhibition opening and publication launch of Lo-Fi Street Cred. \nThe publication\, titled Artists’ lo-fi\, DIY and Alternative Publications in South Africa\, is the tangible outcome of the public roundtable discussions that accompanied the exhibition lo-fi street cred: artist’s zines\, DIY and alternative publications held on 10 August 2024 at the Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts (JGCBA)\, Wits Art Museum (WAM)\, University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). The theme of the roundtable was What value do printed zines and DIY publications offer in a digital age? The discussants were Minenkulu Ngoyi from Alphabet Zoo; Dr. Rangoato Hlasane\, Eva-Rose Lundon and Nokukhanya Sibanda from the Department of Fine Arts\, Wits University; Neil Badenhorst\, Musa Malobola and Ditshegofatso Maoto from the Department of Graphic Design at the University of Johannesburg; Nina Torr\, Maaike Bakker\, Philisiwe Memela and Callum Sutherland from Open Window\, Centurion\, and David Paton moderated the event. Each discussant has contributed to the texts that are included in this publication to which Cape Town-based artist Jonah Sack (whose works were included on the exhibition and the cover of its posterzine catalogue) as well as Victoria Wigzell (director of Johannesburg-based Pulp Paperworks) have contributed reflective writings on their communal practices. \nThe publication was printed at the Open Window MakerSpace using a Risograph printer. \n© Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts\nWits Art Museum\, University of the Witwatersrand\, Johannesburg\, South Africa \nhttps://theartistsbook.org.za\nApril 2025 \nProject coordinator & curator: David Paton\nDesign & Layout: Daniella Rodrigues and Talitha Lewis (Open Window)\nCreative Direction: Nina Torr and Maaike Bakker (Soft Serve)\nPrinting & Production : Philisiwe Memela\, Callum Sutherland and Anni Kapp (Open Window)\nCropping and binding: Wet Ink[/vc_column_text][vc_button button_color=”color-168865″ border_width=”0″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.openwindow.co.za%2Flo-fi-street-cred|target:_blank” button_color_type=”uncode-palette” uncode_shortcode_id=”181256″]More about the project[/vc_button][vc_gallery el_id=”gallery-175975″ isotope_mode=”fitRows” medias=”91808\,91831\,91809\,91844″ gutter_size=”3″ single_overlay_opacity=”50″ single_padding=”2″ uncode_shortcode_id=”144750″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Between Worlds Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:– PUBLIC EVENT –  \nNOW Gallery and Imile Wepener presents Between Worlds \nMermaids have long occupied the space between myth and reality\, dream and nightmare\, beauty and danger. As hybrid beings – half human and half animal – they embody duality and transformation\, reflecting deep-seated cultural narratives about identity\, power and desire. \nThe exhibition\, Between Worlds\, allows artists to interrogate the mermaid’s place in contemporary culture\, questioning the archetypes that have defined these figures. How does the mermaid’s hybridity speak to issues of belonging\, otherness and self reinvention? What does it mean to exist between categories of identity of human and animal\, resisting easy classification? The anchoring theme of mermaids speaks to the fluidity of the body and how its transformation is both cursed and liberated. \nBy placing mermaids in dialogue with today’s complex conversations around gender and identity\, mythology and ecology\, Between Worlds offers a space to reimagine these half human beings beyond folklore\, allowing them to be something new: symbols of resistance and infinite possibility. \nVIEW CATALOGUE
