Siren, Sibyl and Symbol: Mami Wata lore and iconography through a Black Eco-Feminist lens
The focus of my presentation is to connect Western mermaid myths and symbols back to Africa, with the specific focus on Mami Wata, a contemporary Afropolitan icon with an ancient and mysterious history. This black mermaid is often forgotten and ignored in Western literature and art. The ongoing project of decolonisation requires that we critically examine this phenonemon of ‘forgetting’. This lecture revises and re-imagines mermaid myth and symbol through a Black Eco-Feminist lens.
