TERRY KAHN: Code, Magic and Decolonisation: Reprogramming the System
The basic idea of this is promoting ethical practices when teaching/learning tech as it relates to art and design. Some topics I will touch on:
– Untold histories: women and people of colour in tech
– Code as magic: incantations and symbolism (source-code as sorcery)
– Tech education as individual empowerment, and the shift (and retaliation against) imperialistic big-tech
– Tech and its role in community-building and activism: tech as a form of resistance
– Ethics in tech, particularly AI
– A re-imagined web, breaking things down (what is the web? what is a digital asset?)
– The importance of open-source in decentralised, decolonised tech, and its pitfalls
– Accessibility in design (possibly)
– How this relates to teaching in art and design: software guidelines, best practices, theory and inspiration
– Creative tech: tech for the sake of art-making, play and imagination
