Watch and Learn: Intro to Mouldmaking

During this class you will observe how Allen Laing creates a mould that can be used to cast multiple reproductions of a sculptural object. Mouldmaking is used in many arts and crafts, including bronze casting, ceramics and toymaking. The specific technique being taught is a multi-part silicone skin and hard shell mould. Allen will be explaining the process and answering questions as he works, as well as giving tips and tricks learned from experience.

Participants also have the opportunity to bring a small, simple object and create their own one-part fully silicone mould. This will only work with objects that are smaller than 4x4x4cm, are fairly smooth and symmetrical, and don’t have any thin parts protruding. For example, a tooth would work fairly well, but a toy soldier would not.
