Stardust on Broken Ground - Solo Exhibition
– PUBLIC EVENT –
We are thrilled to invite you to the NOW Gallery for a solo exhibition by the incredible Tatenda Magaisa. Tatenda Magaisa is an artist, writer, and cultural producer (MA, Wits) currently in residence at BLVCK BLOCK.
Magaisa’s work is a powerful exploration of Black womanhood in popular culture and the complexities of global interaction. By blending painting, print, and video with themes from horror and sci-fi, she captures the “continuous unease” of our modern world.
Following her major 2024 solo at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and previous showcases at Zeitz MOCAA and the French Institute, her practice dives deep into the “irreconcilable conditions” of art and labour. This is an exhibition you won’t want to miss.
Opening Night: 5th March | 18:00
Artist Walkabout: 14th March | 11:00
Location: NOW Gallery, Open Window – Centurion Campus

Lo-Fi Street Cred - Artist's Zines and Alternative Publications Exhibition and Book Launch
– OPEN TO ALL –
We invite you to join us for the exhibition opening and publication launch of Lo-Fi Street Cred.
The publication, titled Artists’ lo-fi, DIY and Alternative Publications in South Africa, is the tangible outcome of the public roundtable discussions that accompanied the exhibition lo-fi street cred: artist’s zines, DIY and alternative publications held on 10 August 2024 at the Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts (JGCBA), Wits Art Museum (WAM), University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). The theme of the roundtable was What value do printed zines and DIY publications offer in a digital age? The discussants were Minenkulu Ngoyi from Alphabet Zoo; Dr. Rangoato Hlasane, Eva-Rose Lundon and Nokukhanya Sibanda from the Department of Fine Arts, Wits University; Neil Badenhorst, Musa Malobola and Ditshegofatso Maoto from the Department of Graphic Design at the University of Johannesburg; Nina Torr, Maaike Bakker, Philisiwe Memela and Callum Sutherland from Open Window, Centurion, and David Paton moderated the event. Each discussant has contributed to the texts that are included in this publication to which Cape Town-based artist Jonah Sack (whose works were included on the exhibition and the cover of its posterzine catalogue) as well as Victoria Wigzell (director of Johannesburg-based Pulp Paperworks) have contributed reflective writings on their communal practices.
The publication was printed at the Open Window MakerSpace using a Risograph printer.

Breaking Barriers to Creative Learning: A Conference for Creative Educators
The Open Window 2025 Teacher’s Conference aims to bring together educators, researchers, and practitioners in the field of creative arts education to explore innovative strategies for making the art and design curriculum more accessible to diverse learners. The conference will provide a platform for knowledge-sharing, practical workshops, and panel discussions that address challenges and opportunities in art education.
Date: Friday, 16 May
Fee: The conference is free.
Venue: Open Window Centurion Campus, AV Building
Registration: RSVP Form
Catering: Lunch
Theme Exploration in the Programme:
The programme of Breaking Barriers to Creative Learning aims to explore how we as educators can make the art and design curriculum more relevant to diverse learners within a local context. Whether we lecture future teachers or reach high school learners directly, how do we actively guide our students to truly care about and engage with the curriculum in a meaningful way?
Breaking Barriers to Creative Learning offers the opportunity for discussions on decolonising the curriculum—or rather, approaching the curriculum in a decolonised manner—alternative and non-traditional methodologies of teaching that cater to different learning styles and abilities, creative problem-solving, addressing barriers to accessibility in arts education (including socioeconomic and cultural factors), the integration of digital tools and emerging technologies in arts education, and more! Join us as we foster collaboration among educators, institutions, and industry professionals to enhance curriculum development and showcase best practices in inclusive arts education.
